The Excel Center offers programming that is specific to the adult learner experience such as accelerated academics and flexible scheduling, special programs, and resources and supportive services to help students remove barriers they may encounter during their educational journey.
Currently, The Excel center has three Austin-area campuses that serve both day and evening students in addition to four Justice Education campuses, located in Lockhart, Diboll, Henderson, and Overton, TX.

*POSITION SUMMARY:* The primary role of the ESL/English Teacher is to implement, develop, and execute instruction meeting adult students’ needs and aligned to state standards.
The high school campus is within a men’s prison, and a significant portion of the students are English language learners without a previous high school in the U.
S.
The ESL/English Teacher will employ a student-centered approach for these students, approaching their language acquisition challenges with creativity and innovation.
Strategies may include but are not limited to direct instruction, one-on-one instruction, seminars, small group learning, and self-paced lessons.
Depending on the need, the ESL/English teacher may both have his or her own classes and support language learners by pushing into other classes.
Please note that this position is located within a Correctional Facility.
In addition to passing the background check and completing fingerprinting for The Excel Center, the applicant will be required to pass the background check and additional training required by MTC and TDCJ.
*ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:* 1.
Provide instruction to students in foundational English and high school English courses.
2.
Develop and revise a curriculum that includes lesson plans, projects, and assessments that are aligned with the standards of the Excel Center, the TEKS, and the ELPS.
3.
Create and successfully implement academically rigorous lessons, projects, and assessments.
4.
Assess individual students’ progress and learning needs to build and shape instruction around student needs.
5.
Use grades and assessment data to refine lessons and inform instructional practices to achieve learning goals.
6.
Design and implement assessments to measure progress towards academic standards using traditional as well as alternative assessment techniques.
7.
Implement a clear and consistent classroom management system that aligns with the Instructional Team and Campus-wide initiatives while developing students’ character and sense of community in the classroom.
8.
Provide tutorials for students to ensure mastery of the material.
9.
Document and maintain attendance, grades, and progress records according to District policy.
10.
Participate in collaborative curriculum development, grade/ability-level activities, and school-wide functions aimed at improving student retention, productivity, school culture, and new student onboarding.
11.
Regularly communicate student progress effectively and timely with students and colleagues.
12.
Collaborate with school teams to support student success and progress toward graduation and post-secondary planning.
13.
Help shape and develop a school-wide culture that best suits the needs of the school community.
14.
Attend and participate in all staff, team, and professional development meetings and activities.
*OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:* 1.
Assist school team with outreach efforts and community integration events throughout the school year.
2.
Perform other duties as assigned.
*SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:* This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
*REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:* 1.
Bachelor’s Degree.
2.
Current Texas Teaching Certification in English Language Arts (HS grades) and English as a Second Language (ESL).
3.
Bilingualism (English and Spanish).
4.
Experience working with students who receive Special Education/504 services, English Language Learners, and immigrant students.
5.
A broad knowledge of the principles and practices of current educational trends in English curriculum and instruction.
6.
Superior verbal and written communication skills.
7.
Ability to adapt to the imperatives of a correctional setting while maintaining a positive learning environment.
8.
Ability to embrace change positively and manage a workload independently.
9.
A mindset that all students can achieve at high levels.
10.
An understanding of marginalization and how it affects those Excel serves and employs.
11.
Ability to successfully pass a background check and complete fingerprinting requirements.
*PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:* 1.
Master’s degree in English or another related field.
2.
Special Education certification.
3.
1+ years of experience providing instruction to adults.
4.
Experience working with students in urban, non-traditional, and/or adult education settings.
5.
A proven record of results that illustrates the teacher’s ability to increase student achievement using subject-specific instructional strategies.
*COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:* $45,000 - $52,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
